Tax Changes When You Have a Baby

A new dependent unlocks several credits. The math is mostly automatic, but a W-4 update during the year captures the benefit sooner.

Credits that unlock

Immediately:

  • Child Tax Credit ($2,200 per qualifying child under 17, as of 2025)
  • Dependent Care Credit (childcare expenses)
  • EITC boost (higher limits with a qualifying child)
  • Saver's Credit threshold increase

SSN requirement

Your child needs a valid SSN by the filing deadline to be claimed. Apply at the hospital or via Social Security office. The hospital paperwork is by far the easier path; the card arrives by mail in a few weeks. If the SSN hasn't arrived by April, file an extension rather than filing without it, because the Child Tax Credit can't be claimed retroactively for a child whose SSN was issued after the return's due date.

Filing status for unmarried parents

An unmarried parent who pays more than half the cost of keeping up the home now likely qualifies for head of household: wider brackets, bigger standard deduction. When parents live together unmarried, only one can claim the child and only one can be head of household on the strength of that child. Deciding which parent claims, based on the actual numbers, is a small optimization that repeats every year.

Adjusting your W-4 and payroll benefits

Adding a dependent on Step 3 of the W-4 moves the credit into each paycheck instead of waiting for the refund. Birth is also a qualifying life event for employer benefits, opening a short window (typically 30 days) to join the health plan and, importantly, to start a dependent care FSA for the daycare bills coming. Missing the window means waiting for open enrollment.

Starting the college fund with the tax angle in mind

A 529 plan grows tax-free for education, and grandparent contributions are welcome; Florida has no state income tax deduction to chase, so plan choice is about investment options and fees rather than a state break. The baby's own savings account interest is generally too small to matter, but larger custodial accounts eventually meet the kiddie tax, worth knowing before relatives fund one generously.

Common questions

What if the baby was born in December?
Still qualifies for full credits for the year. Under-age-17 test is at year-end.
Can I file without the baby's Social Security number?
You can, but you'll lose the child-related credits for the year if the SSN isn't issued by the return's due date. The better move is an extension while the card is in the mail.
Does my newborn need to file anything?
No. A baby with no income files nothing. The child appears on your return as a dependent, nothing more.
Are the hospital bills deductible?
Unreimbursed medical expenses, including delivery costs, count toward the medical deduction, but only the portion of total medical expenses above 7.5% of AGI, and only if you itemize. For most families the practical answer is no, with exceptions in heavy-expense years.
