Equestrian-specific tax work
Horse operations have specific tax rules around hobby-loss determinations, depreciation, and the at-risk rules. Winter-season horse show income from out-of-state owners creates Florida-specific apportionment questions.
Beyond the barn, the whole practice
Full practice.

The winter season economy
Wellington's show season concentrates a year of economic activity into a few months. Owners and trainers based elsewhere earn Florida income during the season while their home state still taxes them as residents, and the people the season employs, grooms, braiders, farriers, and instructors, need correct treatment as employees or contractors. We file both sides of that economy every year.
Agricultural classification and the property tax bill
Land used for bona fide agricultural purposes can qualify for Florida's agricultural classification, which is applied for through the county property appraiser rather than on the income tax return. It does not change your 1040, but it changes what the property costs to hold, which changes whether the operation's numbers work. We make sure clients know the filing exists and how it interacts with the income-tax picture.
High-income planning for Wellington households
Outside the barn, Wellington returns look like high-income professional returns anywhere: bracket management, the 3.8% net investment income tax, charitable strategy, and K-1s from partnerships and S-corps. The planning happens before December 31; April is just the scorekeeping.
Common questions
- Is my horse operation a business or a hobby?
- The IRS uses a nine-factor test. Operations with profit history, business planning, and professional management qualify as businesses. Those without often get reclassified as hobbies with deductions limited.
- Are my grooms and trainers employees or contractors?
- If you control their schedule and how the work is done, they're likely employees, with payroll obligations to match. Misclassification is one of the most common and expensive mistakes in the horse world, so we review the facts before you pick a form.
- I live up north but show in Wellington all winter. Where do I file?
- Your home state taxes you as a resident, and the operation's Florida activity affects how business income is sourced. The federal return, the home-state return, and the entity filings need to tell one consistent story, which is exactly the work we do.
