Business Setup

Starting a business means entity registration, an EIN, county licensing where applicable, sales tax registration, and a clear tax plan from day one.

What a proper setup requires

Most counties require a local business tax receipt regardless of where the business operates. Sales tax registration, entity formation, and payroll rules all have their own filing obligations. We handle the paperwork end-to-end so nothing gets missed on day one.

Setup versus incorporation

Incorporation covers forming the legal entity itself. Business setup is the broader wrapper: the licensing, registrations, and tax accounts that make the entity operational, whether we formed it or you arrive with an entity already on file from an online service.

The first-year compliance calendar

New businesses inherit a set of recurring deadlines the moment they start operating:

  • County business tax receipt at startup, renewed annually
  • Florida annual report by May 1
  • Sales tax filings from the first taxable sale
  • Quarterly payroll filings once the first employee is hired
  • Estimated income tax payments once the business turns profitable

Home office deduction (if you work from home)

Self-employed owners who work from home can claim the home office deduction if a portion of the home is used exclusively and regularly for business. Two methods: simplified ($5 per square foot, up to 300 sq ft) and regular (actual expenses allocated by business-use percentage).

Zoning and HOA considerations

If you plan to run the business from home, local zoning and HOA restrictions may apply. We don't handle the zoning piece but flag it during setup so you can check before investing in buildout.

Common questions

Can I claim the home office deduction as an employee?
No, not since 2017. Employee home office deductions were eliminated by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act through 2025.
Does the home office deduction trigger an audit?
The mythology that it does is outdated. Claiming the deduction correctly with real documentation is not a notable audit flag.
I already formed my LLC online. Can you finish the setup?
Yes, that's common. We audit what has been done, fix what's wrong, and complete the registrations and elections the filing service skipped.
