When you need a DBA
If you operate under a trade name that differs from the legal entity name on file, you need a fictitious name registration. Sole proprietors operating under any name other than their personal legal name need one too.
The filing process
Name search to avoid conflicts, publication in a county newspaper, then filing with the Florida Division of Corporations. Registration lasts five years.
Common questions
- Do I need a DBA if I already have an LLC?
- Only if you operate under a name different from the LLC's legal name. If the LLC and trade name match, no DBA is needed.
- What does it cost?
- State filing is $50. Newspaper publication typically runs $30–$60. Our service fee covers search, filing, and publication coordination.
