Equity compensation, in practice
RSUs are taxed as wages when they vest, which is where sell-to-cover math and withholding shortfalls bite. ISOs bring alternative minimum tax exposure on exercise, NSOs are taxed at exercise, and an 83(b) election on restricted stock has a hard 30-day window that cannot be reopened. We plan vest years in advance so the tax bill is a known number, not an April surprise.
Moving to Boca from a high-tax state
New York, New Jersey, California, and Illinois do not stop taxing you just because you bought in Boca. The year of the move needs a part-year return, and equity that vested after the move can still be partially sourced to the old state. We build the domicile file (declaration of domicile, homestead, licenses, day counts) so a residency questionnaire from the old state gets a clean, documented answer.
Working alongside your other advisors
Most Boca clients already have a financial advisor and many have an estate attorney. We coordinate directly with both, so Roth conversions, charitable plans, and trust structures reflect one strategy instead of three competing ones.
Common questions
- Do you handle executive equity comp?
- Yes. RSUs, ISOs, NSOs, 83(b) elections, and multi-state sourcing of vested equity are regular work for our Boca clients.
- Does Florida tax my RSUs?
- Florida has no personal income tax, so nothing at the state level here. Federally they're taxed as wages at vest, and if you earned part of the grant while living elsewhere, the old state may claim a share.
- My old state sent me a residency questionnaire. What now?
- Don't answer it casually; the wording matters. We respond with the documentation that establishes your Florida domicile and, if it escalates, represent you through the audit.
- Will you talk to my financial advisor directly?
- Yes, with your authorization. It's usually the fastest way to get conversions, gifting, and withholding decisions made correctly.
